Dr. Karen Summers is an associate doctor and the chief of staff at First Eye Care Killeen. A fifth generation Texan from Victoria, Texas, she takes great pride in being able to care for her patients' visual and ocular health needs.
Dr. Summers earned her Bachelor of Science degree from Texas A&M University in 2000. Before beginning her doctorate training, she worked on the staff of a large eye surgery center in her hometown where she developed a passion for eye care. She then attended the University of Houston College of Optometry and earned her Doctor of Optometry degree in 2006.
After graduation, Dr. Summers continued her training by completing a prestigious residency in the area of ocular and systemic disease in the Boston Veteran Affairs system of hospitals in Massachusetts. Working with our nation's veterans garnered Dr. Summers extensive experience in the diagnosis and management of complicated eye disease.
Dr. Summers is licensed by the Texas Optometry Board as an optometric glaucoma specialist, the highest level of optometric licensing in Texas. She is also certified by the National Board of Examiners in Optometry and has passed the rigorous Advanced Competency in Medical Optometry certification examination, a distinction for less than one percent of practicing optometrists.
Dr. Summers is an active member of the American Optometric Association (AOA), the Texas Optometric Association (TOA), and the Heart of Texas Optometric Society (HTOS). She serves on numerous committees for the TOA, and she is the current president of the HTOS.
Away from the practice, Dr. Summers enjoys traveling, cooking, and being outdoors, along with spending time with her friends a family and spoiling her two nieces. |
